The external steel staircase and walkway of this waterfront home had settled at their base — the supporting concrete cracked and the wall starting to split. URETEK underpinned it with hydraulically jacked micropiles bracketed directly to the steel beams, driven to firm strata, then re-leveled — without dismantling the steel frame.

This waterfront home has an external steel-framed staircase and walkway reaching toward the water's edge. As the soft riverside soil moved, the concrete base supporting the steel frame settled and cracked, the frame tilted, and the house wall began to crack too. This kind of job differs from a normal concrete floor, because the load has to be transferred from a steel frame straight onto the piles — so URETEK used micropiles with brackets fixed directly to the steel beams.

🪜 The Problem: An External Steel Staircase Settling at Its Base

The concrete base under the steel posts had settled and cracked, with weeds growing through; the frame had begun to tilt and the walkway to step. The adjacent house wall showed diagonal cracks — a sign the soil below could no longer carry the load.

🌊 The Setting: A Waterfront Home on Soft Riverside Soil

Waterfront ground has soft, high-moisture layers, so structures on shallow footings settle more easily than usual. The fix required driving the piles deep through the soft layer to genuinely load-bearing strata.

🔩 The Fix: Micropiles Bracketed Straight to the Steel Beams

We opened the base only at each point, fixed load brackets directly to the steel beams of the staircase frame, then hydraulically jacked steel micropiles (ASTM A53 tube) down to firm strata — transferring the steel frame's weight onto the piles instead of the settled soil.

📊 Re-Leveling, Every Pile Pressure-Checked

As each pile was jacked, the supervisor read the hydraulic gauge to confirm capacity and logged every pile (190 bar, 23 m deep, +2.0 mm lift), then eased the steel frame back to level before locking the pile heads and finishing.

✅ The Result: A Stable Frame, a Level Walkway

With the load transferred onto piles in firm strata, the staircase and walkway were steady and level again, neatly restored — the owner back to using the waterfront walkway with confidence, and no need to dismantle the existing steel frame.
